Passing my first Salesforce exam with OnVUE

7 October 2026

I hadn’t taken a Salesforce exam in a while. My last certification was Data Cloud in early 2025, before Salesforce moved away from Webassessor and introduced Trailhead Academy for certification management, with Pearson OnVUE for online proctoring.

I’ve seen mixed feedback since then. Some people praised the new setup, others complained. But that’s how it goes with any major change; people are cautious by default.

When Salesforce announced Marketing Cloud Next, I knew it was my chance to get a fresh certification and test the new platform myself.

Scheduling my Salesforce exam with OnVUE

After logging into my Trailblazer account and filling out the initial information, I was redirected to OnVUE to select my language, time zone, and exam preferences. Since there’s no testing center in my city, I chose the online option.

That’s where I hit my first snag. Every date I tried only showed times after midnight which was incredibly frustrating. But I tried again later that same day and suddenly found plenty of available slots. If you run into this, don’t give up right away. It seems to be a timing issue on their end.

Once I found a slot that worked, I scheduled the exam and applied my voucher. Both went through smoothly.

Preparing for the exam

I spent the next few days preparing thoroughly. My background with Data Cloud, flows, and basic marketing knowledge gave me confidence I’d pass.

The day-of email said to log in 30 minutes early. What I didn’t realize was how those 30 minutes would actually be spent.

The OnVUE check-in process

The pre-exam setup took the full 30 minutes, possibly longer if I hadn’t prepared. Here’s what they require:

  • Official ID documents (have them ready)
  • Photos of your entire desk area and surroundings (left, front, back, sides)
  • Pictures of your ID
  • A system check to verify everything passes

My tip: clear your desk completely beforehand. I watched the proctor instructions and can tell you they will have you tidy up if there’s clutter. Do it in advance so you’re not scrambling. Also grab water before you start. I was thirsty by the time the exam actually began, and there’s no breaking to grab a drink once it starts.

Taking the Salesforce exam with OnVUE

The interface was similar to the old Webassessor, so I made the mistake of not reading the instructions carefully. Immediately on the first question, I wasn’t confident and clicked “Review.”

That was a mistake. The Review button opened the full exam overview with a Finish button staring me in the face. I started to panic. I managed to back out and discovered you need to click the Review icon next to each question instead.

Lesson: actually read the interface instructions, even if you’ve taken Salesforce exams before. They’ve changed things around.

After that initial jolt, the exam went smoothly. Sixty questions (no experimental section), three options each, a mix of difficulty levels. I felt solid about my answers.

Results and wrap-up

I submitted and got instant results with breakdowns by section, just like before. A survey followed, then my results via email and the official certification.

Would I use OnVUE again?

Yes, it was stressful, but mostly because of the unfamiliar setup, not because it was poorly designed.

The biggest complaint I’ve heard about the new process comes from people struggling during the pre-exam phase, likely because they weren’t ready when the 30-minute window started.

If you’re hesitant about taking an exam on the new platform, don’t be. Every change feels weird at first. Once you do it, you realize it’s fine.

Just show up 30 minutes early, actually be ready, and you’ll be in good shape.
